Christmas Blitz 2011 - Report

Christmas Blitz 2011 - Report

We had our annual Christmas Blitz on Tuesday 20th December with 21 participating. Thanks to all who attended for making it a really fun and enjoyable night.

We used the same time-handicapping system worked out by Sean Nolan last year and again it worked well with the top of the leader board throwing up a nice mix of players on different ratings.

Thanks to all those who helped out with setting up the tables and boards, refreshments, tidying up etc. And an especial thanks to Justin Correy for organising and running this enjoyable Blitz with his relaxed professionalism.

Naomh Barróg Chess Club Players score in Dublin City Open

September, 2011
Six members of our Club members played in the recent Dublin City Open Tournament – one in the Majors (Justin Corry), three in the Challengers (Tom Collins, Stephen Kelly and Aridas Tolkus) and two in the Juniors (Joe Rafferty and Andrew O'Brien).
In the Challengers four players tied at the top with 5 out of 6 points. Two of the four were Naomh Barróg players Stephen Kelly and Aridas Tolkus. A tie-break gave first position to Aridas and runner-up to Stephen.
Andrew O'Brien in the Junior Section finished with a creditable 3 out of 6. After the third round he had scored 2.5 out of 3 - a very impressive score for someone who had never played in a Tournament or a competitive chess programme before.
While our remaining players didn't score as many as they would have wished, they each enjoyed, and benefited from, what was an exciting and well organised event.

Good North Dublin Chess League showing

Two Naomh Barróg players scored well in this league. Barry Plummer won his section with 5 out of six. Sean Nolan shared first place in his section with 6 out of 7.

RAPID PLAY TRIUMPH
(March 2011)

The Club's end of season Swiss Rapid Play Tournament attracted so many entries that the number of rounds had to be extended from 4 to 5. Almost 30 players with grades ranging from zero to the 1600s competed. The 1st two rounds were an hour each and the remaining three 45 minutes each. Adjustments for grading differentials sometimes resulted in the higher graded players having 2 or 4 minutes to make all their moves while their lower graded opponent had 58 or 41 minutes. This produced some pretty tense games and some very spectacular blunders. Fun to watch. Win or lose, everyone who participated enjoyed themselves and the Controller, Justin Corry, was cheered to the echo.

Ladder Rules

  1. The ladder will commence on first Tuesday in September after the new ICU grades appear and will end on the 1st Tuesday of the following year. The person in 1st place on the ladder at that time will be the winner, person placed 2nd is runner-up and junior places as per Rule 16.
  2. Initial positions are determined by reverse ICU ratings. Players with identical ratings will be arranged in alphabetical order.
  3. You can challenge the person above you on the ladder, to a maximum of three places.
  4. If you are the challenger and win, you take the defender's place on the ladder.
If you draw, positions remain the same.
If you are the defender and lose, you go down one place on the ladder.
  5. When you challenge someone and are defeated you cannot challenge that person again for three weeks.
  6. If you are challenged and defeated, you cannot challenge the person who defeated you for three weeks.
  7. Players may only decline a challenge if:
    (a) It is contrary to these rules.
    (b) They have already accepted a challenge and are waiting for their opponent to arrive.
  8. If your last two games were against a higher placed player then you can't turn down the next challenge from a lower placed player.
  9. Players may mutually arrange a game from the Friday before the next club night. When doing this, inform (text/email) the Ladder Controller before club night.
  10. You may only play one game per week. All games to be played on club premises.
  11. Players not attending the club for three weeks in a row (four weeks in July/August) will be dropped one place on the ladder. This rule does not apply on any night that a home LCU match is played.
  12. Time control will be 1 hour each on the clock.
  13. Players will draw for colours before each game. Subsequent games with the same player should reverse colours where possible.
  14. ICU rules apply.

  16. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd plus best Junior (under 1200) and 2nd best Junior position (provided these Juniors have not already won 1st or 2nd place). Members must play a minimum of twelve games to qualify for a prize.
  17. Results to be given to the Ladder Controller. Disputes will be arbitrated by the Ladder Controller. If the Ladder Controller is a participant in a dispute, the Club Secretary will arbitrate.
