Introduction

Cargin Church and Graveyard

Cargin Cemetery is situated on the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, 3 miles south-west of Headford Town, Co. Galway in the Republic of Ireland.

See general location map or close-up satelite map.

The site contains an ancient ruined church, possibly dating from the 10th century, originally surrounded by a circular enclosure within which the old cemetery is also situated. A newer section, west of and adjacent to the old, was opened in the 1960s.

These web pages outline the work currently being undertaken by Cargin Cemetery Committee, a local voluntary community group. This group have taken over the maintenance reponsibilities for the cemetery from Galway County Council, who retain ownership.

In 2000, the Committee spearheaded a drive to clean-up and refurbish the overgrown cemetery and make it a more fitting place for families and friends to visit the graves of their loved ones. See a record of the work completed to date and the ambitious plans they have in place going forward.
